The roll planishing process simultaneously flattens and smoothes the weld crown and root bead, producing a uniform weld with a cross section thickness equalling that of the adjacent parent material.

This uniformity is especially important when weldments will undergo further processing such as bulge, stretch and spin forming.

Roll planishing actually improves the mechanical properties of the weld by cold working the weld's columnar structure and relieving normal stresses caused by the welding process.
